Seed Phrase Backups and Wallet Recovery
A recovery phrase is a human-readable representation used by some wallets to recover seed material and derived keys. Anyone who obtains the necessary phrase and any required additional secret may gain control of the associated assets.
How it works
BIP-39 wallets encode entropy plus a checksum into a supported word list, then derive seed material using the mnemonic and an optional passphrase. Wallets can use different standards and derivation paths. A device PIN is not generally a substitute for the recovery phrase, and a BIP-39 passphrase is not the same thing as the device unlock PIN.
Worked example
For a paper-only exercise, compare two fictional records: “wallet standard, network and derivation notes, backup location” versus a screenshot stored in an online photo account. The first supports an explicit recovery plan without publishing secrets; the screenshot adds account and sync exposure. Do not create or enter a real phrase to complete this exercise. A forgotten required passphrase may produce a different valid wallet rather than a clear error.
Amounts, prices and scenarios are fictional teaching examples. They exclude any effects not explicitly stated and are not trade recommendations.
Limits and common mistakes
Use the wallet maker’s verified recovery instructions and protect backups against loss, unauthorized access, fire and water as appropriate. Do not email phrases, type them into support chats or split them casually into fragments that create new failure modes. Additional copies trade availability against exposure. Inheritance planning needs careful trusted arrangements.
Knowledge check
Should you enter a phrase into a website that promises to verify your backup?
Read the explanation
No. An unsolicited verification or synchronization site is a common theft route. Recovery should follow the verified wallet’s supported process in an environment you trust, with the exact standard and any passphrase understood.
