LESSON 15 OF 15 · MACROECONOMIC ANALYSIS
Integrated Macro Thesis and Historical Case Study
A durable macro thesis states a causal chain, expected timing, alternative explanations and observable invalidation criteria. A historical narrative must distinguish facts known then from hindsight.
1. The economic mechanism
A macro thesis is a falsifiable explanation connecting economic evidence to a relative asset valuation over a specified horizon. Start with a country pair, not a generic statement that inflation is bullish or bearish. Specify what the market currently expects, what you expect differently, and why the gap might close. A good thesis can be wrong and still be well constructed.
2. How to measure it
Imagine economy A has slowing services inflation and weakening new orders, while economy B has resilient wage growth and a central bank warning about persistent price pressure. Your initial hypothesis is that policy expectations may diverge in favor of B. Before drawing a currency conclusion, compare the two-year yield spread, existing futures pricing and external-balance risks.
3. Worked macro interpretation
Create a scenario tree with base, upside and downside cases. Assign conditional probabilities that sum to 100%, but treat them as subjective estimates to be updated rather than objective truths. If the base case has 50% probability, upside 25% and downside 25%, explain the evidence behind each weight. Never manufacture precise price targets from those probabilities alone.
4. Limits and competing explanations
The thesis must distinguish catalysts from background conditions. An upcoming inflation release can test the expected policy divergence, but a geopolitical shock may dominate the price path. Identify the data series, scheduled events, liquidity conditions and cross-asset indicators you would monitor. State the circumstances under which you would exit the analysis without placing a trade.
5. Analyst research workflow
Practice: write a two-page investment committee memo containing the initial consensus, your variant perception, three evidence pillars, two opposing arguments, scenario probabilities, invalidation triggers and a post-event review. Grade the quality of the process independently from whether the currency subsequently moved in the anticipated direction.
6. Applied case study
Imagine inflation falling for four months, growth weakening and the central bank signaling patience. Draft a thesis for lower short yields, then challenge it with wage persistence and a new energy shock. Interpretation discipline: Identify the raw observation, the unexpected component and the inference separately. If the scenario contains missing information, state what is missing rather than inventing a conclusion. This is a teaching example, not a historical price forecast.
7. Independent research exercise
Prepare a one-page thesis memo with data vintage, assumptions, catalyst calendar, three scenarios, invalidation and post-event review.
8. Review and validation
Independent worked analysis: Build a falsifiable two-country thesis
Hypothetical worked example: Country A shows disinflation and weakening consumption; country B has firm services demand and stable wage growth. The starting hypothesis is that relative policy expectations could favor currency B, but the spot rate may already price that outcome.
Calculation and decision exercise: Write a thesis in five lines: evidence, consensus, potential surprise, market expression and invalidation. Add one observation that would make you reverse the conclusion before entering a position.
What this example cannot establish: Macro narratives can be accurate yet unprofitable when valuations, positioning or the timing of the catalyst are unfavorable.
Evidence checklist for this specific lesson
- Write down the precise inputs used in the build a falsifiable two-country thesis example, including their units and observation dates.
- Distinguish what can be computed directly from what must be inferred about future prices or policy.
- Test the opposite interpretation using a clearly stated alternative assumption, not a revised chart drawn after the outcome.
- Document transaction costs and the maximum hypothetical loss before treating any market view as an executable strategy.
