Complete Profile Strategy, Backtesting and Trading Journal
Integrate profile context, scenarios, risk limits and honest performance measurement.
A complete strategy is a documented experiment, not a promise of income. Use the same session definitions, data assumptions and rules from the first historical observation through the last. Include losses, missed entries and no-trade days so that a backtest cannot quietly select only attractive examples.
Define the market and data
Choose one instrument, data provider, contract handling method and session template. A backtest mixing futures volume with broker tick volume is not reproducible. Write the chart settings before collecting examples.
For Gold, specify GC contract month, exchange session, tick grouping and whether the series is continuous. For spot XAUUSD, state the broker and that tick activity is not centralized volume.
Create the pre-session map
Before each session, mark prior high, low, value boundaries, POC and a higher-timeframe composite reference. Keep the map simple enough to act on. Every level needs a reason for inclusion.
Write a three-sentence narrative describing whether price is inside, above or below recent value and which boundary would change the hypothesis.
Choose two setup families
Use a balance rotation model and an acceptance breakout model rather than dozens of unrelated patterns. Each must specify context, trigger, invalidation, target and no-trade conditions.
For rotation, require rejection at an edge and return into value. For breakout, require sustained acceptance beyond value. If the evidence is mixed, do not force a trade.
Risk rules first
Decide maximum risk per trade, daily loss limit, maximum number of attempts and news restrictions before entry. Risk limits protect the process, not the certainty of any particular outcome.
Calculate contract size from actual tick value and stop distance. Include fees and conservative slippage. If the smallest contract breaches the budget, skip the trade.
Walkthrough of a balanced day
Suppose a session opens inside yesterday’s value and repeatedly rotates near POC. Price briefly tests VAL and returns inside. A rotation hypothesis may be considered only after the rejection is observable.
Mark entry after confirmation, stop beyond the failed-test extreme and target near a central reference. Record what happens if the session instead accepts below VAL; that is an invalidation, not a reason to average down.
Walkthrough of a trend day
Suppose price opens above yesterday’s VAH, tests the boundary and continues to transact above it. The developing profile may shift higher, supporting a conditional acceptance scenario.
Document when enough evidence accumulated to enter, the distance to invalidation and whether the move already traveled too far to justify risk. A late chase is not rescued by a bullish narrative.
Backtest without leakage
Replay historical data in chronological order and use only profile values known at the decision time. Final-session value boundaries must not be substituted for developing values. Avoid tuning rules on the same sample used to judge them.
Split sessions into development and holdout periods. Record every eligible setup, including skipped trades, losing signals, slippage assumptions and periods where no trades appeared.
Journal and review
A journal should capture date, symbol, venue, session settings, screenshots, setup family, entry trigger, invalidation, size, costs and outcome. Grade process separately from profit. A profitable rule break is still a process failure.
After thirty or more examples, summarize expectancy, drawdown, win rate, average win and loss, and worst streak. Review whether results survive different volatility regimes; never present backtest profits as a guarantee.
Review questions and study checklist
For Complete Profile Strategy, Backtesting and Trading Journal, choose a single futures instrument and exchange session before constructing a profile. Record the session open and close, tick size, value area convention and whether the chart uses TPO letters or traded volume. Then calculate the point of control and note whether the following session accepts price above, below or through that level. A different session template can produce different profile levels; keep the template fixed for comparisons.
Apply Complete Profile Strategy, Backtesting and Trading Journal to two explicitly different datasets: exchange-traded gold futures and a broker spot-gold quote. Futures volume reflects transactions on that exchange, whereas spot tick volume counts quote updates at a particular provider. Do not describe the two series as interchangeable. Document which feed and contract month produced each value area or point of control, then assess whether the conclusion changes when the input dataset changes.
Independent review: Complete Profile Strategy, Backtesting and Trading Journal
For complete profile strategy, backtesting and trading journal, start with the distinction between “Define the market and data” and “Create the pre-session map”. Record what can be observed directly in the data or chart before adding a causal interpretation. Write down the timeframe, instrument and the point in time at which the evidence became available.
For complete profile strategy, backtesting and trading journal, next revisit “Choose two setup families”. Build two competing explanations for the same observation, then identify the additional observation that would distinguish them. Avoid assuming that a visual pattern reveals the intentions of unseen market participants.
Your review of complete profile strategy, backtesting and trading journal should include one historical example that fits the lesson definition and one that appears similar but fails an essential condition. Save both examples with the same measurement rules. If the classification changes when the chart is viewed without future candles, record that limitation rather than discarding the example.
- Define an observable condition for “Define the market and data” without relying on future price action.
- Explain how “Create the pre-session map” changes the interpretation, including one contrary outcome.
- Identify a failure mode related to “Choose two setup families” and a condition for rejecting the hypothesis.
- Estimate transaction costs, execution uncertainty and a maximum hypothetical loss before discussing a trade.
